About NCAA Women's Basketball

Women's basketball has a long and storied history as part of the NCAA. Throughout its history, the sport has seen remarkable growth and innovation, while also facing numerous challenges. The earliest forms of women's basketball date back to the late 1800s, when colleges began hosting small tournaments and competitions. During these early years, women had to fight for respect within their sports programs and often faced limited resources. Despite these struggles, the sport continued to grow in popularity in the early 1900s. In 1971, the first-ever official Women’s Collegiate National Championship was held by the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW). In contrast to men’s games at the time, this championship featured a full-court press rule and other innovative game strategies that made it unique from traditional men's basketball rules.

The formation of the NCAA Women's Division I tournament in 1982 marked a major step forward for women's basketball. Initially featuring 32 teams competing at four regional sites, this tournament quickly gained momentum among fans and universities alike. By 1997, all 64 teams were invited to the tournament with opportunities for automatic bids available depending on performance during regular-season play. As participation in women’s basketball continues to grow each year, so does its level of competition, with nearly 11 million girls playing it across all levels of play today. Throughout its history, NCAA women’s basketball has produced some incredible champions who have gone on to achieve success both on-and-off court as professional athletes and global ambassadors for their sport. The top Division I NCAA championships won include South Carolina (2017 & 2020), UConn (1995–2015 & 2016–17), Tennessee (1987–98 & 2007-08), Stanford (1990 & 1992), Notre Dame (2001 & 2018), Baylor (2012 & 2019) and Oregon State (2016).
