The Bluegreen Vacations Duel, formerly known as the Twin 125s, is a NASCAR Cup Series preliminary event to the Daytona 500 held annually in February at Daytona International Speedway.
The race consists of two separate races, each 125 miles (200 km) in length, which serve as qualifying races for the Daytona 500. The winners of each race earn the first and second starting positions in the Daytona 500 respectively.
In the past, the Duels were held on Thursday night before the Daytona 500. However, since 2015 they have been held on the Wednesday night before the Daytona 500, airing live on Fox Sports 1.
The Duels were created in 1959 as qualifying races for the Daytona 500, which had been expanded to 500 miles (800 km) in length that year. The format has varied over the years, but since 1988 each Duel race has consisted of two segments.
The first segment is 30 laps in length, and the second segment is 60 laps in length. The starting positions for the Daytona 500 are determined by each driver's finishing position in their respective Duel race.
In recent years, the Duels have served as a preview of sorts for the Daytona 500, as the races often feature close finishes and multiple lead changes. In fact, since 2011 there has been a green-white-checkered finish in each of the Duels.
The most recent Duel race was won by Austin Dillon, who passed Kyle Larson on the final lap to take the checkered flag. This year's Daytona 500 is scheduled for Sunday, February 26th at 2:00 PM ET on FOX.
