NASCAR Events at Yadara

The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, LLC (NASCAR) is an American auto racing sanctioning and operating company that is best known for stock car racing. The privately owned company was founded by Bill France Sr. in 1948, and his son, Jim France, has been the CEO since August 6, 2018. The company is headquartered in Daytona Beach, Florida. Each year, NASCAR sanctions over 1,500 races at over 100 tracks in 48 US states as well as in Canada and Europe. NASCAR has presented races at the Suzuka and Motegi circuits in Japan, the Calder Park Thunderdome in Australia, and the Rockingham Speedway in England. NASCAR is second to the National Football League among professional sports franchises in terms of television ratings in the United States. Internationally, its races are broadcast on television in over 150 countries. In 2004, NASCAR's Director of Business Communications David Carter stated that the company held 17 of the top 20 regularly watched sporting events in the nation.

In 2012, NASCAR was ranked as the third most popular sport in the United States by ESPN with 6.2% participation (tied with bowling) behind Major League Baseball (9.5%) and the National Football League (37.1%). The sport had a regional following well before it became popular nationally in the 1970s. Stock car racing began in the 1920s with bootleggers running moonshine through the Appalachian Mountains from Tennessee and Virginia into North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia to escape the harsh local moonshine taxes imposed by the federal government. These races eventually evolved into what is now known as NASCAR events. The first organized race was on June 19, 1949, on the Charlotte Speedway dirt track. It was won by Jim Roper driving a Modified car. Bill France Sr. later founded NASCAR on February 21, 1948, with support from several regional promoters who sold tickets to races. France started the company with $5000 in cash.

The first NASCAR "Strictly Stock" race was held on June 19, 1949, at Charlotte Speedway. It was won by Jim Roper driving a car owned by Raymond Parks. The second "Strictly Stock" race was held on November 15, 1949, at the Daytona Beach Road Course; it was won by Bill Rexford. The NASCAR "Grand National Series" (now the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series) was launched in 1950. The first race was held on February 15, at Daytona Beach. Red Byron won the inaugural event. The following year, the series traveled to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the first time. Lee Petty, driving a car owned by his father, won the race. The NASCAR "Convertible Division" (now the Xfinity Series) was also established in 1950. The first race was held on June 10, at Darlington Raceway; it was won by Herb Thomas.
