About Ligue 1

Ligue 1 officially known as Ligue 1 Uber Eats for sponsorship reasons, is a French professional league for men's association football clubs. It is the country's primary football competition and serves as the top division of the French football league system. Ligue 1 is one of two divisions making up the Ligue de Football Professionnel, the other being Ligue 2. Contested by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with Ligue 2. Seasons run from August to May, with teams playing 38 games each totaling 380 games in the season. Most games are played on Saturdays and Sundays, with a few games played during weekday evenings. Play is regularly suspended the last weekend before Christmas for two weeks before returning in the second week of January.

Ligue 1 was inaugurated on 11 September 1932 under the name National before switching to Division 1 after a year of existence. The name lasted until 2002 before switching to its current name. AS Saint-Étienne is the most successful club with ten league titles in their history, while Olympique Lyon is the club that has won the most consecutive titles, winning seven Ligue 1 trophies in a row from 2002 to 2008. With the presence of 68 seasons in Ligue 1, Olympique de Marseille holds the record for most seasons among the elite, while FC Nantes and Paris Saint-Germain hold the League's all-time records for appearances and points respectively. The current champions of France are Paris Saint-Germain, who won their ninth title in the 2020–21 season.

Ligue 1 is one of the top national leagues, currently ranked fifth in Europe behind the Spanish La Liga, English Premier League, German Bundesliga, and Italian Serie A. It has produced many prolific goal-scorers throughout its history. Since its inception, the league has been home to 62 players who have managed to score 100 or more goals in the competition, of whom only six have managed to reach the 200-goal mark. Players such as Raymond Kopa, Jean Gratton, Just Fontaine, Roger Piantoni, Maryan Wisnieski, and Josip Skoblar have all become household names due to their exploits in the league. In recent years, the competition has been won by some of Europe's top clubs, such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Juventus.

However, there have been many French clubs that have also enjoyed success in the tournament, such as Olympique de Marseille, AS Monaco, and Paris Saint-Germain. The first-ever goal in the history of the competition was scored by Carmelo Micciche for Olympique Marseille in a game against RC Strasbourg on 11 September 1932. The most recent goal was scored by Kylian Mbappé for Paris Saint-Germain in a game against AS Saint-Étienne on 24 February 2021. As of the 2020–21 season, the competition has been sponsored by French telecommunications company Orange S.A. and is officially known as the Ligue 1 Orange.
