The Rochester Knighthawks, nicknamed the K-Hawks, are a professional box lacrosse team competing in the North Division of the National Lacrosse League. Home to the Rochester Americans, Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial is where they bring their talents to Rochester, New York. The Knighthawks have a new owner, Pegula Sports, and Entertainment, which acquired the team's intellectual property from its former proprietor, Curt Styres. After the conclusion of the 2018-2019 season, he moved what used to be this same version of the team to Halifax in Nova Scotia and renamed them as 'Halifax Thunderbirds'. As a newly established team, the expansion Knighthawks have no relation to their predecessor. All records and championships stayed with the original franchise when they moved to Halifax. For 24 years, the Knighthawks proudly represented Rochester from 1995 to 2019.
Joining the Major Indoor Lacrosse League in 1995, they played there until 1997 and then became one of the original members of the National Lacrosse League when it began its 1998 season. The Knighthawks had an impressive run, qualifying for the playoffs in their first 13 seasons from 1995-2007. Setting a new precedent in the Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League, this is an accomplishment that stretches all the way back to when it first began. The Philadelphia Wings had held the record for eleven consecutive years until it was recently broken. As a pioneering feat, they became the first National Lacrosse League team to earn three straight championships (2012–2014). On September 13, 2018, Curt Styres declared that he was welcoming a brand-new team to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and would be moving the Knighthawks' there for season 2019–2020.
To guarantee that Rochester's presence in the league remained undisturbed, Terry and Kim Pegula (the latter of whom was raised in Rochester suburbs) purchased the Knighthawks' intellectual property along with an expansion franchise. We kept the original name but opted for a new color scheme and logo to match. On May 29, 2019, at the Blue Cross Arena, the team logo design and colors were ceremonially revealed with great enthusiasm to an eager audience. This moment marked a vital milestone amongst many leading up to the launch of this new organization. This new franchise is completely independent and not a continuation of its predecessor. Halifax has now gained all titles and records due to the transfer. On June 27th, 2019, the Knighthawks proudly announced Mike Hasen as head coach, Dan Carey as General Manager, and Pat O'Toole as an assistant coach.
