About Tri City Americans

The Tri-City Americans are a renowned junior ice hockey team in the Western Hockey League, based in Kennewick, Washington. The team proudly hosts their home games at Toyota Center. The renowned television show Z Nation featured the Tri-City Americans in its popular episode, "Day One." The Tri-City Americans are one of the founding franchises of the Western Hockey League, previously known as Calgary Buffaloes before being rebranded to Centennials after a single season in 1966. The franchise was formerly known as the Billings Bighorns from 1977 to 1982 before they relocated to Nanaimo, British Columbia, and changed their moniker to the Nanaimo Islanders. At the end of their first season, they relocated to New Westminster, British Columbia, and assumed the identity of the New Westminster Bruins. By 1988, they had settled in Tri-Cities where they have remained ever since. On November 29, 1989, history was made by Americans goaltender Olaf Kolzig. He became the first goalie to score a goal in the Western Hockey League when he launched it into an empty net against Seattle Thunderbirds.

Year after year, the Americans' rivalry with Spokane Chiefs on Highway 395 is an electric one. The series between them is always action-packed and intense, which makes it their most important rival annually. The rivalry between the two teams is so strong that they continue to face off in an annual New Year's Eve game, with the Americans playing at home. On the one and only occasion when this custom was set aside, it was due to a 24-hour strike organized by the Americans in protest of an instructor's inciting training methods. In the 2002–03 season, remarkable sixteen-year-old goaltender Shannon Szabados took hockey history into her own hands and became the first female to ever participate in the WHL when she competed for one game with the Americans. In 2010, Szabados made history by claiming the gold medal in Women's Ice Hockey at the Winter Olympics while representing Canada. On March 15, 2008, the Americans made history as they won their first US Division regular season championship in a nail-biting game against Spokane Chiefs at Toyota Center in Kennewick, Washington. This resulted from an outstanding 2007–08 WHL season for the Americans.

For the third consecutive season, the Americans reigned victorious in the US Division, taking home both the Western Conference regular season championship and Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy in recognition of having achieved an exemplary record throughout their regular-season games. On December 31, 2008, the Americans made history at their New Year's Eve matchup against the Spokane Chiefs as they had a record-breaking 6,042 attendees in attendance for that game inside the Toyota Center. On March 13, 2010, the Americans made history when they attracted a crowd of 6,053 to their game against Spokane. This attendance figure broke all previous records and firmly established the team as one of the most successful in American sports. After a historic run, the Americans tasted victory by winning the Western Conference championship for the first time ever during the 2010 playoffs. The Americans managed to prevail against Chilliwack Bruins, Kelowna Rockets, and Vancouver Giants in successive series but were unable to sustain their momentum when they faced off with Calgary Hitmen in five games of the League Championship.
