The Saskatoon Blades are an esteemed major junior ice hockey team that plays in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division, which was formerly known as the Western Canadian Hockey League (WCHL). With a capacity of 15,195 seats at their home arena -SaskTel Centre- they have become one of Saskatchewan's premier sports teams. In 1964, the Saskatoon Blades took to the ice for their first season. Previously having played as the junior sister team of the Saskatoon Quakers, owner Jim Piggott successfully petitioned to change both their name and colors to join Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). For six years, the team was recognized as the Saskatoon Wesleys until 1955. In 1966, a fresh version of this name resurfaced and combined with the Saskatoon Quakers to form one unified force in North Saskatchewan Junior B Hockey League. As a leading junior ice hockey team, they proudly battle for victories in the Western Hockey League Eastern Division.
In 1968, the Junior A franchise Saskatoon Olympics was formed in Saskatoon, serving as a crucial developmental affiliate for the renowned Blades. In a historic moment for the Blades, from late January to early March of the 2012-13 season they achieved an awe-inspiring feat by winning 18 games in a row - breaking their team record! Bruce Gordon, the captain of Saskatoon Blades early in the 1980s, was a formidable forward player for both Saskatoon Blades and Medicine Hat Tigers during his prolific hockey career. To honor Gordon's impact and legacy, the SaskTel Centre proudly displays a "Bruce Gordon" banner, while hockey players have adorned their helmets with #BeLikeBruce stickers. Throughout his life, he was an avid coach for midget hockey teams as well. To commemorate Gordon's legacy, the season home opener featured both of his former teams—the Blades and Tigers—and also acted as a fundraiser for "Cops for Cancer" to raise money towards cancer research in his name. Some of their rivals include Spokane Chiefs, Regina Pats, Red Deer Rebels, Swift Current Broncos, and Seattle Thunderbirds.
