The Saginaw Spirit reigns supreme as the premier junior ice hockey team in Saginaw, Michigan. As members of the West Division and Western Conference of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), they proudly join a select group within Canada's renowned Major Junior leagues as part of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). In 2001-02, Dick Garber, the proprietor of several local auto dealerships, bought the North Bay Centennials and shifted them to Saginaw. To select a name for their new team, Handley Elementary School ran an exciting contest that was eventually won by one of its students who proposed "Saginaw Spirit." With its roots in St. Catharines, Ontario, the team has seen a variety of names throughout its history; from Falcons to Teepees and Black Hawks between 1943 and 1976. During this time, it achieved two Memorial Cup Championships as the Teepees in 1954 and 1960 respectively. In 1976, the franchise relocated to Niagara Falls and became known as the Flyers.
In 1982, they continued their voyage by transferring to North Bay where they renamed themselves Centennials - a title that lasted until 2002 when Saginaw welcomed them with open arms. Through the Spirit's extensive promotions and outreach throughout Mid-Michigan, their fan base has grown significantly, with season ticket holders likewise increasing. As one of the most popular teams in the Ontario Hockey League, it is no surprise that they boast some of the highest attendance rates as well. After three formative seasons, the Spirit was triumphant in claiming their inaugural playoff berth on March 2, 2006; however, they were defeated by the Guelph Storm in round one. Led by Todd Watson, the subsequent two years saw them reach playoffs yet again and suffer losses to a bitter rival - Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds - both times: 6 games in 2007 and 4 games in 2008 respectively.
In 2009, the Spirit made history after winning their first playoff series since relocating to Saginaw- triumphantly sweeping Guelph in four remarkable games. Unfortunately, they were then swept by the London Knights during the second round of playoffs. On the historic evening of December 29, 2013, history was made in Detroit when the Spirit and Spitfires battled each other on a frozen pond at Comerica Park - marking it as the first time an Ontario Hockey League game was held outdoors. The Spitfires mesmerized the record-breaking crowd of 25,749 spectators at the Canadian Hockey League event with their 6–5 victory. That night, London Knights and Plymouth Whalers later surpassed that attendance mark in the same venue. It all started with Dennis Desrosiers—the first leader of the Saginaw Spirit. His fame preceded him, as he had devoted a decade to hockey in Michigan; beginning years ago with the Saginaw Gears (IHL) and continuing on through his coaching experience with Flint Generals, Saginaw Generals, and Kalamazoo Wings. No one knew at that time how integral Desrosiers was about to become for local fans. Some of their rivals include Erie Otters and Windsor Spitfires.
