The Red Deer Rebels are a junior ice hockey team based in Red Deer, Alberta. The organization was founded in 1992 and has since become one of the most successful teams in the WHL: Western Hockey League (WHL). During their time in the WHL, they have won two league championships and reached the WHL finals four times. The Rebels play their home games at the ENMAX Centrium arena in downtown Red Deer. The arena holds 6,700 spectators, making it one of the largest venues for junior hockey in Canada. Over their 28 years of existence, the Red Deer Rebels have achieved numerous successes on and off the ice. Off the ice, they have been a pillar of the community hosting events such as Hockey Fights Cancer Night and sending players to elementary schools to talk about bullying prevention. On the ice, they have had 6 players drafted into the NHL over their 28-year history including Ryan Nugent-Hopkins from Bonneyville, Alberta who was drafted first overall by Edmonton Oilers in 2011. The Red Deer Rebels have had numerous alumni move on to great careers in the NHL, AHL, and other professional leagues.
Some of these include Connor McDavid (Edmonton Oilers), Colten Teubert (Los Angeles Kings), and Tyler Ennis (Buffalo Sabres). The team’s greatest achievement came in 2001 when they won their first Memorial Cup championship after defeating Val d'Or Foreurs 4-3 in overtime at Saskatoon. This victory marked one of the most exciting moments for junior hockey fans throughout Canada as the Rebels went on to win two more league Championships during that decade. In recent years, top players such as Brandon Hagel and Brett Davis have helped keep the franchise competitive with each recording over 30 points per season during their time with Red Deer. Every year there is no shortage of excitement from loyal Rebels fans who travel from all over Alberta to see their team compete at home games or away matchups against rival opponents.
