The Moose Jaw Warriors are a junior hockey team based in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, and compete in the Western Hockey League (WHL). They were founded in 1984 as part of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL), and are one of two teams in the WHL whose name includes a geographic location, with the other being the Swift Current Broncos. Over the years, they have developed an intense rivalry with their provincial rivals, the Saskatoon Blades. Under head coach Mike Vandenberghe, who took over in the 2013-14 season, the Warriors have had one of their most successful runs ever. During his tenure, the team has made four consecutive WHL playoff appearances, winning six division titles and clinching three Central Division championships. In addition to having success on the ice and making six playoff appearances since the 2014-15 season, Vandenberghe was awarded Coach of the Year honors for that 2015-16 season. Though they haven't won any Memorial Cups as of yet, some notable former players from Moose Jaw have gone on to great success at higher levels.
Most notable is goaltender Carey Price who played parts of two seasons with the Warriors before finding NHL stardom with the Montreal Canadiens. Other alumni include Doug Smith (Carolina Hurricanes), Greg Classen ( Nashville Predators ), Brett McLean ([Chicago Blackhawks]), Stephen Weiss ( Florida Panthers ), Ivan Dornbush ( Detroit Red Wings ), Adam Foote ( Colorado Avalanche ), and current San Jose Sharks forward Rourke Chartier. During home games at Mosaic Place, which opened December 28th, 2019, Warrior faithful bring an incredible atmosphere each time they hit home ice and can be heard from across downtown Moose Jaw. After every goal scored by The Warriors, fans all participate in chanting "Moose Jaw! Moose Jaw! GO warrior GO!" creating a loud raucous roar throughout Mosaic Place. With a passionate fan base behind them and strong play on home ice since their construction year, it looks like The Moose jaw warriors will continue to be an entertaining competitor that can battle against any team.
