Representing the city of Edmonton, Alberta in Canada with pride, the major junior hockey team - The Edmonton Oil Kings - proudly competes in the Western Hockey League. Since July 2008, the Edmonton Oilers hockey team has been owned by Daryl Katz's Oilers Entertainment Group - and they own the Oil Kings too! For the 2007-2008 year, The Oil Kings revived their legacy by entering the Western Hockey League. In 2012, the Oil Kings experienced a remarkable victory as WHL Champions. As such, their attendance at the Memorial Cup was inevitable; however, unfortunately, they were unable to emerge victorious against Shawinigan Cataractes in the tie-breaker playoff and thus conceded with a 6–1 score line. In a triumphant victory, the Oil Kings emerged victorious in the 2014 Memorial Cup against their opponents, the Guelph Storm. Just a few reasons why you should see them play!
The Oil Kings emerged triumphant twice, claiming the Ed Chynoweth Cup as winners of both the 2011–12 and 2013–14 WHL playoffs. This enabled them to compete in prestigious tournaments; namely, the 2012 Memorial Cup and the 2014 competition. On an unforgettable day in May of 2014, the Oil Kings proudly won their third Memorial Cup title - and first for the reborn team - after a stunning 6-3 victory against Ontario Hockey League champions Guelph Storm. In 2022, the Oil Kings earned their 3rd Ed Chynoweth Cup title by defeating the Seattle Thunderbirds in a six-game series. This victory granted them an invitation to compete at the prestigious Memorial Cup. Oil Kings alumni who have been selected in the first round of NHL drafts include Henrik Samuelsson, Griffin Reinhart, Mark Pysyk, and Curtis Lazar. Additionally, second-round draft picks such as Brett Pollock, Tristan Jarry, and Mitch Moroz are also amongst the proud Oil King alumni. Rivalries: Prince Albert Raiders, Calgary Hitmen.
