About Calgary Hitmen

As one of Canada's premier junior ice hockey teams, the Calgary Hitmen are a force to be reckoned with on the rink. Based in Alberta and boasting a long-standing history, they bring an intense energy to every game. Representing the Central Division of the Western Hockey League (WHL), The Hitmen are set to make their presence known on ice. As their home turf, the Scotiabank Saddledome hosts all of their exhilarating matches. The world-renowned professional wrestler, Bret "The Hitman" Hart who hails from this area, served as a founding owner and the source of inspiration for the team's name. Since its inception in 1994, the team has been proudly owned by the Calgary Flames hockey club since 1997. The Calgary Hitmen are the third WHL team to represent the city, following in line after both the Centennials and Wranglers. The Hitmen have earned the title of the WHL's best team four times, and made it to their respective playoffs for an astonishing thirteen years in a row - from 1998 all the way through 2010! In the year 1999, they were not only the first team from Calgary to acquire the President's Cup as league champions, but also bearers of a great feat; representing their city in the Memorial Cup after almost seventy-three years since Calgary Canadians won national junior title back in 1926.

The Hitmen have achieved many WHL attendance records, and in 2004-05 made an impressive accomplishment as the first team across all Canadian Hockey League to average 10,000 fans per game. An impressive 39 former members of the Hitmen have gone on to play in the esteemed National Hockey League. After his illustrious tenure as coach and general manager of the Swift Current Broncos, Graham James founded the Hitmen in 1994. He brought together a group of eighteen investors, featuring NHL stars Theoren Fleury and Joe Sakic, plus Bret Hart who is renowned for his exploits in the World Wrestling Federation. Excitedly grasping the opportunity to fill their newly acquired Saddledome, the Calgary Flames welcomed a new team with open arms. After the Wranglers relocated to Lethbridge and became the Hurricanes in 1987, Calgary remained without a Western Hockey League team for more than three decades. Despite skepticism, the league ventured into Calgary with confidence. After all, they had withstood competition from the NHL in larger markets such as Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg and most recently its failed endeavor in Calgary. For those times when the Saddledome is occupied and unavailable, The Stampede Corral has been a comforting alternative home for any odd game.

They used the Corral for regular season home games in 1995-1996 and playoff games in 1998 and 2016.Calgary solidified their status as the team with the best regular-season record after finishing with 107 points, due to CHL leader Kozun's remarkable point total and Martin Jones' stellar goaltending. The latter was recognized for his excellence by being named WHL Goaltender of the Year. At one point, the Hitmen's playoffs appeared to be ending earlier than expected when they dropped three of their first four games against the Warriors in their opening round series. Nonetheless, with a surge of determination and grit, they managed to win three consecutive matches and emerged victorious after seven grueling games. After beating the Tigers in six games and Wheat Kings in five, they were able to reach the WHL championship series for a second year consecutively. As the 11 veterans from the heart-breaking loss in 2009 stepped onto the ice for their final game against Tri-City Americans, they made a pact to not succumb to defeat like last year. Jones was rightfully granted the playoff MVP award for his outstanding performance. He only allowed a mere seven goals throughout the entire championship series as his Hitmen team prevailed over their opponents in five games, claiming their second Ed Chynoweth Cup and further writing themselves into franchise history.

As the cheers of over 15,000 home crowd filled the stadium and echoed throughout the city, a victorious win earned The Hitmen their spot in 2010's Memorial Cup tournament. They also did many home games at Scotiabank Saddledome, 555 Saddledome Rise SE, Calgary AB. During the tournament, Calgary had a successful 2-1 round robin record by beating Moncton Wildcats from QMJHL and host Brandon Wheat Kings. However, their luck ran out during semi-finals when they lost in overtime against Brandon once more. After several of the team's highest goal-scorers graduated, the Hitmen plummeted to last place in the WHL during 2010–11. At one point they tied a franchise record with a dismal 12 consecutive losses. Get ready to experience hockey like never before; the Calgary Hitmen are hosting a special outdoor game at McMahon Stadium on February 21, 2011 against the Regina Pats as part of the 2011 Heritage Classic! Before a roaring crowd of 20,888 spectators, Regina emerged victorious with a score of 3-2; setting newly established WHL and CHL attendance records in the process. This was not only one of the highest attended junior games ever seen but is now cemented as an iconic moment in history. In honor of former teams that once called the Corral home, the Hitmen hosted an extraordinary three-game series known as 'The Corral Series' in 2019. During the 2018-2019 season, the Calgary hockey team put on an impressive show with a total of 78 points and a 36-26-5-1 record. This earned them third place in their Central Division and sixth overall in the Eastern Conference! Rivals: Prince Albert Raiders, Edmonton Oil Kings, Lethbridge Hurricanes, Medicine Hat Tigers
