About ATP World Tour

The ATP World Tour is the premier professional tennis circuit and has been featuring some of the best players in the world since its establishment in 1990. Originally known as the Men’s Tennis Council, this organization was created to help protect men’s professional tennis tour rights and to promote a growth of fan engagement around the sport worldwide. The ATP World Tour currently has over 2,400 tournaments that are played at various levels across all five continents. The first ever ATP World Tour event took place in New York City in 1970 with two different events: a singles tournament which had an 8-man draw and a doubles tournament with 16 teams. Since then, the tour has grown from 5 events up to 56 throughout 1981 when it became an official part of the Grand Prix circuit.

In 1989, The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) was created as a new governing body for men’s professional tennis, and they took over operations of what had previously been called the Men’s Tennis Council. In 1997, several changes were made to strengthen the structure of the tour: The Single-Year Ranking system was introduced, allowing players to accumulate points for their yearly performance; and Prize Money increased significantly from $3 million in 1985 up to $21 million in that point in 1997. In 2003, even more, changes were made, including reducing each year's season down to 11 months from January 1st through November 15th and changing from a single-year ranking system back to a multi-year system called Race To London which awarded points across multiple tournaments over multiple years.

Over the years there have been numerous tennis legends who have graced stages around the world on tour including Pete Sampras, Bjorn Borg, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic amongst many others. These names have gone on to become household staples due to their incredible achievements such as winning Grand Slam titles or records such as most consecutive weeks at the number one spot on ATP Rankings - both held by Swiss sensation Roger Federer while his Spanish rival Rafael Nadal holds most French Open titles with 12 wins! Today, ATP continues its mission “To celebrate excellence in tennis by elevating player narratives through phenomenal events worldwide” as it strives forward towards becoming one of the most globally recognized tours in sports today thanks to its storied history stretching back over 50 years now!
