In Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1993, James "Jimbo" Mathus, Tom Maxwell, Katharine Whalen, Chris Phillips, Don Raleigh, and Ken Mosher founded the swing and jazz group Squirrel Nut Zippers. The group's sound has been described as "a hybrid of Delta blues, gypsy jazz, 1930s-era swing, klezmer and other styles of vintage American music". Their 1996 single "Hell" reached No. 1 on Billboard magazine's Modern Rock Tracks chart in January 1997. The band's success was short-lived, however, and by 2000 they had broken up. In the intervening years, several of the members have continued to work together on various musical projects. In 2006, Mathus and Maxwell revived the Squirrel Nut Zippers name with a new lineup of musicians. They released a new album, The Flying Club Cup, in 2007. The album peaked at No. 41 on the Billboard 200 chart and received positive reviews from critics. The band has toured sporadically in the years since, usually with a rotating lineup of musicians. In 2016, the Squirrel Nut Zippers announced that they would be going on an indefinite hiatus. Finding Squirrel Nut Zippers tickets for cheap can be tough, but Yadara has got you covered.
