About Russell Gunn

Russell Gunn is an American jazz trumpeter, composer, and educator. He is best known for his work as a leader of the band Ethnomusicology and as a solo artist. Gunn was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and began playing trumpet at age nine. He attended high school at Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan before receiving a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies from Northern Illinois University. After graduating from college, Gunn moved to New York City where he played with some of the most renowned jazz musicians of his generation including Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, and Nicholas Payton. Gunn has released seven albums as a leader; two with his band Ethnomusicology, two solo projects, and three others under various other guises. His first album with Ethnomusicology was The Elements (2001). This album features original compositions by Gunn that incorporate elements of traditional African music into modern jazz styles. His second album with the band, Youngblood (2005), was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. 

In 2007, Gunn released his first solo album entitled Blues Legacy which featured guest appearances from saxophonist Joe Lovano and vocalist Cassandra Wilson among others. His second solo project was titled Ethnomusicology Vol 2 (2008) which showcased his love for funk music as well as traditional African rhythms and melodies. Gunn has won numerous awards throughout his career including the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award (1998), the Kennedy Center Fellowship (2000), and the International Association for Jazz Education Outstanding Instrumentalist Award (2002). In addition to performing live concerts around the world, Gunn also serves on the faculty at Northwestern University where he teaches courses on improvisation and composition. Russell announced that he will be embarking on a worldwide tour in 2023 to promote his upcoming album "The Sound Of Now". The tour will feature performances in Europe, Asia Pacific countries such as Australia and New Zealand, North America & South America.
