Mike Stern, born on January 10th, 1953, is an American jazz guitarist who has played with multiple bands over his long career. Some of these bands include Blood, Sweat & Tears and trumpeter Miles Davis from 1981 to 1983 and again in 1985. In between and after all that, he's managed to release more than a dozen albums as a solo artist.
Stern's album, Big Neighborhood, was released in 2009 and features an all-star cast of musicians including Eric Johnson, Dennis Chambers, Richard Bona, and Jim Beard. The album received critical acclaim and is considered one of Stern's best works to date.
Stern continues to tour and perform all over the world with his own band as well as other artists. He shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon and continues to be one of the most innovative and respected guitarists in the jazz world today.
Stern was named the best jazz guitarist of 1993 by Guitar Player magazine. At the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal in June 2007, he was given the Miles Davis Award, which recognizes internationally acclaimed artists whose work has contributed significantly to renewing the genre. In 2009 Stern was listed on Down Beat's list of 75 best Jazz guitarists of all time. He received Guitar Player magazine's Certified Legend Award on January 21, 2012.
