Kim Waters, an American jazz artist born on March 20, 1965 in Havre de Grace, Maryland. Kim Waters is a saxophonist, composer and producer who has been recording and touring since the early 1990s. Kim Waters grew up in a musical family; his father was a jazz trumpet player and his mother was a singer. Kim started playing the saxophone at the age of nine and by the time he was thirteen he was performing with his father's band. Waters attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts on a full scholarship. After graduating from Berklee, Waters moved to Los Angeles where he began his professional career. Waters has released twenty-two albums as a leader and has appeared on over fifty albums as a sideman. He has toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Waters has performed or recorded with such artists as Patti Austin, Aretha Franklin, Lionel Richie, Marvin Gaye, Quincy Jones, George Benson, B.B. King, Gladys Knight, Stanley Clarke, Najee and many others. He has also composed music for film and television, including the score for the motion picture "The Five Heartbeats" and the theme song for the television show "City of Angels." Waters' saxophone playing has been described as "smooth" and "soulful." His sound has been compared to that of such greats as Grover Washington, Jr. and David Sanborn. Waters is also an accomplished flutist and has been featured on several of his recordings. In addition to his work as a recording artist and touring musician, Waters is also an active clinician and educator. He has presented master classes and clinics at colleges and universities around the world. Waters is a faculty member of the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music, where he teaches jazz saxophone. He is also a member of the Grammy-nominated USC Thornton Jazz Orchestra. Kim Waters has been awarded two Gold Records and has received eleven Grammy nominations. His album "One Night Stand" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. Waters was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo on the album "Ripple Effect." Waters has been awarded the prestigious Albert Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award by the Rhythm and Blues Foundation.
