Julian Lage is an American guitarist and composer. He is considered a child prodigy, having started playing guitar at the age of five. Lage has performed and recorded with a variety of musicians including Pat Metheny, Gary Burton, Jim Hall, Chuck Mangione, and Andy Summers. He has released three albums as a leader: Sounding Point (2009), Gladwell (2012), and World's Fair (2015).
Lage was born in Santa Rosa, California, and began playing guitar at the age of five. He studied under Jim Keltner, Peter Erskine, and Alan Pasqua at the Colburn School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles. Lage was a member of the Pat Metheny Group from 1997 to 2005, touring and recorded on the albums Imaginary Day (1997), Speaking of Now (2002), and The Way Up (2005). He has also performed with Gary Burton, Jim Hall, Chuck Mangione, and Andy Summers.
Lage's debut album as a leader, Sounding Point, was released in 2009 on EmArcy Records. The album features Lage's working trio of bassist Scott Colley and drummer Kenny Wollesen, as well as special guests including saxophonist Mark Turner and guitarist John Scofield.
Lage's second album, Gladwell, was released in 2012 on Mack Avenue Records. The album features Lage's trio with Colley and Wollesen, as well as special guests including vocalist Gretchen Parlato and saxophonist Joshua Redman.
Lage's third album, World's Fair, was released in 2015 on Mack Avenue Records. The album features Lage's trio with Colley and Wollesen, as well as special guests including saxophonist Chris Potter, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, and trombonist Ryan Keberle.
Lage has been a member of the Gary Burton Quartet since 2013, and has recorded two albums with the group: Guided Tour (2013) and Common Ground (2016).
Lage is also a member of the jazz supergroup Hudson, which released its self-titled debut album in 2017.
Lage has received critical acclaim for his guitar playing and composition. He was voted "Rising Star Guitarist" in the 2013 and 2014 editions of Downbeat magazine's Critics Poll, and won first place in both the 2012 and 2013 Guitar Player magazine reader polls. Lage was also awarded the 2015 Guggenheim Fellowship in Music Composition.
