About Femi Kuti

Femi Kuti is a Nigerian musician born in London and raised in Lagos. He is best known for his afrobeat music, which combines elements of jazz, funk, and traditional Nigerian Yoruba music. Kuti began his musical career playing in his father's band, the Africa 70. He later formed his own band, Positive Force, with which he released several albums including Afrobeat Airways (1994) and Shoki Shoki (2001). Kuti has been nominated for Grammy Awards on three occasions, winning once for Best World Music Album for his album Africa for Africa (2011). In addition to his musical career, Kuti is also a political activist, and has been critical of the Nigerian government on several occasions.

Kuti was born in London on 16 June 1962, the eldest son of Nigerian musician Fela Kuti and his first wife Remi Kuti (née Olowopopo). Kuti's mother was a Yoruba woman from Owo, while his father was from Abeokuta. When Kuti was four, his family moved to Lagos, where his father established the Kalakuta Republic, an independent commune. Kuti grew up in the Kalakuta Republic and witnessed his father's conflicts with the Nigerian government firsthand. In 1977, Kuti's father was arrested and imprisoned for allegedly conspiring to overthrow the government; Kuti's mother was also arrested and later died in prison. These events had a profound impact on Kuti, and he has been critical of the Nigerian government on several occasions.
