Charles Tolliver is an American jazz trumpeter and composer. Tolliver was born in Florida in 1942, but raised in Detroit, Michigan. He began playing the trumpet at an early age, and by high school he was already performing professionally. After graduating from high school, Tolliver attended Wayne State University, where he studied music theory and composition. He later transferred to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Tolliver's first major professional gig was with the Max Roach Quintet, which he joined in 1964. He recorded several albums with Roach, and also began working as a sideman with other well-known jazz musicians such as Miles Davis and Horace Silver. In the early 1970s, Tolliver formed his own jazz ensemble, the Charles Tolliver Big Band. The band recorded several albums and toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe.
