The band was founded in 1977 by guitarist Stan Lee and singer-songwriter Leonard Graves Phillips. The pair had recently left their previous band, the Fitters, after disagreements with its management. They began playing together as a two-piece before adding bassist and future manager Charlie Quintana. The Dickies soon became one of the most popular bands in the Los Angeles punk scene, playing frequently at clubs such as the Whisky a Go Go and the Starwood. The band's debut album, The Incredible Shrinking Dickies, was released in 1979 on A&M Records. The album featured the band's best-known song, "Banana Splits (The Tra La La Song)," which was a minor hit in the United States and Canada. The Dickies' second album, Dawn of the Dickies, was released in 1980. The album failed to match the success of its predecessor, but did spawn the minor hit single "You Drive Me Ape (You Big Gorilla)." In 1981, the Dickies left A&M Records and signed with Frontier Records. Their third album, Idjit Savant, was released later that year. The album was a critical and commercial disappointment, leading the band to be dropped from Frontier Records. The Dickies' fourth album, Stukas Over Bedrock, was released in 1982 on Enigma Records. The album was another commercial failure, and the band broke up shortly after its release. In 1986, the Dickies reunited without Phillips or Quintana.
