Snail Mail is the American indie rock solo project of guitarist and singer-songwriter Lindsey Jordan. At the age of 15, Jordan made his live debut as Snail Mail. In 2016, he gained popularity with the EP Habit.
Lindsey Erin Jordan grew up in the Baltimore enclave of Ellicott City, Maryland. Her father works for a textbook publisher, while her mother owns a lingerie shop. Jordan has two older siblings, a brother and sister. Jordan was raised as a Roman Catholic. She picked up the guitar when she was 5 years old, and as a teenager, she developed a passion for the punk culture. Jordan watched Paramore perform live on the Riot at the age of 8! tour. She referred to the event as a "huge moment" that gave her the motivation to eventually start her own band. Jordan taught herself how to play guitar at the age of 12 after she heard Nirvana's Nevermind album. At 14, she started writing her own songs. After high school, she attended the Maryland Institute College of Art for one semester before deciding to pursue music full-time.
In 2016, Jordan signed with the independent record label Matador Records. She released her debut EP, Habit, on June 3, 2016. The EP was recorded in just four days at a studio in Philadelphia. The following month, Jordan embarked on her first North American tour as the opening act for Girlpool.
Jordan's debut studio album, Lush, was released on June 8, 2018. The album was recorded over the course of two years at a studio in Baltimore. Lush received positive reviews from music critics.
On October 4, 2019, Jordan announced that she had signed with the record label Saddle Creek Records. She released her second studio album, Habit, on April 24, 2020.
Jordan has cited Kurt Cobain, Liz Phair, and Pavement as some of her musical influences.
