The Kaiser Chiefs are an English indie rock band from Leeds. It was founded in 2002 by Nick Baines (keyboards), Andrew White (guitar), Ricky Wilson (lead vocals), and Simon Rix (bass guitar). The group's name was inspired by the former South African football team Kaizer Chiefs. In 1997, Baines and White formed their first band, Parva, with friends Ross Jarvis (drums) and James Russell (guitar). The band played gigs in Leeds and Bradford, but they disbanded when Russell left to study at university. In 2003, the band released their debut album Employment to critical acclaim. The album peaked at number three on the UK Albums Chart and was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). The band's second album, "Yours Truly, Angry Mob", was released in 2007 and reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. The album's first single, "Ruby", peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart.
In 2012, after a hiatus during which members pursued solo projects such as drummer Nick Hodgson, the Kaiser Chiefs reconvened with new guitarist Steve Cradock and new drummer Vijay Mistry, and released their third album, The Future Is Medieval. In 2016, the band released its fourth studio album, Stay Together. The Kaiser Chiefs have been nominated for five Brit Awards, winning three; in 2006, they won the NME Award for Best British Band. They also won the award for Best Live Act at the 2006 Q Awards and were nominated for Best Group at the 2007 UK Festival Awards. The band has also had success in mainland Europe, winning the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Alternative Act in 2008. The Kaiser Chiefs' musical style has been compared to that of new-wave acts such as Blondie, Elvis Costello, and The Clash. Their earlier material was primarily influenced by The Kinks and The Who, while their later work has been compared to that of Oasis and Arctic Monkeys. The band has also been described as "a cross between the Arctic Monkeys and the Kaiser Chiefs".
