About Broken Social Scene

Broken Social Scene is a Canadian indie rock band, a musical collective including as few as six and as many as nineteen members, formed by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning. Most of its members play in various other groups and solo projects, mainly in the City of Toronto.

The band has released six studio albums, its most recent being Hug of Thunder in 2017. The band's 2003 album You Forgot It in People was a critical and commercial success, and is now certified platinum in Canada. Broken Social Scene won the Juno Award for Best Alternative Album in 2006 for their self-titled album; it was also nominated for the Polaris Music Prize in 2005 and 2010.

The band's first two albums, Feel Good Lost (2001) and You Forgot It in People (2003), were released on the independent record label Paper Bag Records. The band signed to the major label Arts & Crafts for its next album, Broken Social Scene (2005). This album was nominated for the Shortlist Music Prize.

The band released its fourth album, Forgiveness Rock Record, on May 4, 2010. The album was co-produced by David Newfeld and Broken Social Scene member Justin Peroff. The album was recorded at Metalworks Studios in Mississauga, Ontario. It was announced on March 8, 2010 that the album would be released on May 4, 2010. The first single from Forgiveness Rock Record, "World Sick", was made available as a free download on the Arts & Crafts website on March 25, 2010.

The band's fifth studio album, Hug of Thunder, was released on July 7, 2017. It is the band's first album in seven years. The album was co-produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen and Broken Social Scene member Brendan Canning.

The band has toured internationally and has collaborated with a variety of artists, including Jason Collett, Feist, Metric, Leslie Feist, Arcade Fire, Emily Haines, Stars, David Newfeld and LCD Soundsystem.
