James is a Manchester-based English rock group that was founded in 1982. The band's most well-known tracks are "Come Home," "Sit Down," "She's a Star," and "Laid," which also became a smash on American college radio. They enjoyed fame throughout the 1990s, earning four top 10s on the UK Singles Chart and nine top 10s on the UK Albums Chart. In November 1988, drummer Whelan became involved in an on-stage fight with Booth and was asked to leave the band. He was not officially replaced until 1990, when Steve White joined the band. The following year, the band released their fifth album, Laid. It was a commercial success in the UK, reaching number three on the UK Albums Chart and spawning the top 10 single "Laid." The release of the singles "Sit Down" and "Come Home" were successful in the independent charts. The album Gold Mother was supposed to be released by Rough Trade but Geoff Travis, the owner of label, believed that James could only reach a limited audience. The band disagreed with this notion and purchased their album from Rough Trade. They gave a very successful winter tour in 1989 which led to Fontana Records wanting to sign them. This optimistic note ended what had been a difficult decade for the band. Shortly after their last album was released, James' contract ended and Tim Booth announced he was leaving the band to focus on his own projects. They played a farewell tour of the UK at the end of that year and recorded Getting Away With It... Live at their final hometown gig in Manchester. Brian Eno added to the tour, as did former members Larry Gott and Andy Diagram. Brian Eno also came out on stage at London's Wembley Arena during the tour, joining them. The following year, Gold Mother, Laid, and Whiplash (each with bonus tracks) were re-released by Mercury Records as B-Sides Ultra: B-sides & Bonus Cuts." In January 2007, singer Tim Booth's personal website announced that he "will be rejoining James in early 2007 for a series of live shows." This news came with the replacement of James's old domain holder on their new site wearejames.com. The new line-up consisted of those who recorded the album Laid: Booth, Gott, Glennie, Davies, Hunter and Baynton-Power. Booth later confirmed in interviews that he was convinced to rejoin the band after meeting up and jamming with Glennie and Gott the previous November--and from this session sprung new songs.
