STS9, or Sound Tribe Sector 9, is an instrumental electronic rock band from Atlanta, Georgia. They are often credited as pioneers of the “Livetronica” movement, having blended elements of traditional rock and jazz with electronic music since their beginnings in 1998. Originally made up of five members — Hunter Brown (guitar/midi controller), David Phipps (keyboards/synths), Jeffree Lerner (percussion), Zach Velmer (drums), and David Murphy (bass/midi controller) — STS9 has released a total of thirteen studio albums by 2019. Their debut album, Interplanetary Escape Vehicle, was released in 2000 and featured more traditional EDM sounds than the group’s later works. Later releases featured improvisation and experimentation with ambient music and progressive rock influences. Kinetic World was released in 2009 to much critical acclaim, featuring the singles “Vibyl" and “Ramone & Emiglio". Continuing this trend into 2010’s Axe the Cables, STS9 explored ambient soul-driven soundscapes to create a unique experience for listeners.
The band has been widely praised for their impressive live performances that feature extended improvisations and cutting-edge light shows. To keep audiences engaged and connected on tour, they have developed a custom iPhone app that allows fans to control visuals projected at shows with their phones. The group also won a Jammy award in 2007 for Best Live Performance from an Electronic Act after being voted on by fans online. STS9 has toured extensively throughout the U.S., performing over 350 dates across eight years. In 2017 they sold out Red Rocks Amphitheater -- one of Colorado's most revered venues—and became one of only a handful of acts to sell out multiple consecutive nights there due to intense fan demand!
