Paul Kalkbrenner was born in Leipzig, Germany on June 27, 1977. The Berlin-based artist is a self-taught musician and producer who has been active in the electronic music scene since the early 1990s. Kalkbrenner first gained notoriety as a member of the duo PKP, who released several 12" singles on the now-defunct MFS label in the mid-1990s.
He also released a handful of solo tracks under the alias "Paul dB+" before adopting his current moniker in 1999. Kalkbrenner's breakthrough album, self-titled "Paul Kalkbrenner", was released in 2002 on Bpitch Control. The album's lead single, "Sky and Sand", was a commercial success, reaching the Top 10 in several European countries. Kalkbrenner has released eight studio albums to date, the most recent being 2014's "Parts of Life". He has also collaborated with numerous other artists, including his brother Fritz Kalkbrenner, on the 2006 album "Sky and Sand".
Kalkbrenner is also a prolific remixer, having remixed tracks for a wide range of artists including Moderat, Moby, Hot Chip, and Depeche Mode. In addition to his musical career, Kalkbrenner has also appeared in several films, most notably the 2009 German film "Berlin Calling", in which he played the lead role of DJ Ickarus.
