Nile Gregory Rodgers Jr. is an American musician, record producer and composer. He is the co-founder of Chic, and served as the band's guitarist and producer from 1970 to 2018.
Rodgers was born on September 19, 1952, in New York City, to Beverly Goodman and Nile Rodgers Sr., who was a musician himself. Rodgers began playing guitar at age 13, and by 1970 he had joined the rock band chic. Rodgers and his bandmate Bernard Edwards wrote and produced many hits for other artists, including "We Are Family" for Sister Sledge and "Le Freak" for Chic. In the 1980s, Rodgers produced albums for David Bowie, Madonna, Duran Duran and Diana Ross. He also worked with Michael Jackson on the album Thriller, and helped to produce Jackson's hit single "Billie Jean".
In the 1990s, Rodgers continued to produce and write for other artists, including Eric Clapton, Sting and Duran Duran. He also worked on the album HITnRUN Phase Two with Prince.
Rodgers has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and has received a number of Grammy Awards. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2016 Grammy Awards.
Nile Rodgers headlined Cardiff Castle Wales on July 12, 2019, and on February 17, 2020, he took part in Eric Clapton's tribute show for Ginger Baker. Nile Rodgers gave 600 free tickets to furloughed US Federal employees in Washington, DC during the US Government Shutdown in January 2019.
Rodgers appeared on "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" on November 13, 2020, as a part of the BBC Radio 2's Allstars' Children in Need charity song. The song debuted at number seven on the Official UK Singles Chart and at the top of the Official UK Singles Download Chart and Official UK Singles Sales Chart, respectively.
