The Moderat project was founded by German electronic music supergroup Sascha Ring, better known as Apparat, and Modeselektor members Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary.
Moderat's first release was an EP, Auf Kosten der Gesundheit ("At the Cost of Health") in 2003, which was followed by their self-titled debut album in 2009. The album reached number one on the German iTunes chart, number two on the DDC chart and was named Album of the Week by BBC Radio 1 DJ Gilles Peterson.
The group's second album, II, was released in 2013 to critical acclaim. It debuted at number one in Germany and was nominated for the 2013 Mercury Prize.
The third album by Moderat, III, was made available in Germany on March 29, 2016. A Reminder music video was published on YouTube a month prior.
After their 2017 global tour came to a close on September 2 in Berlin, Moderat announced in August 2017 that they would be taking an indefinite break.
2018's Annihilation featured a minute of the song "The Mark (Interlude)" from the album II.
The sabbatical ended on October 15, 2021, when Moderat advertised a live performance named "MORE D4TA" for 2022 on their Instagram page.
A book on the Modeselektor record Happy Birthday! Sean Nye released it as part of the 33 1/3 Europe series. The founding of Moderat is the subject of a chapter.
Moderat announced on 9 February 2022 that More D4ta, their fourth studio album, would be released on 13 May 2022 by Monkeytown Records. The following day, "Fast Land," the album's lead single, and its corresponding music video were both premiered. On March 10, 2022, "Easy Prey," the second single, and a music video were made available. The track listing was made available on iTunes the same day. The album was made available on May 13, 2022.
