Jeff Abel, better known by his stage name Excision, is a Canadian producer and disc jockey. His first release was in 2007 with the No Escape EP. In 2014, he founded Rottun Recordings. Abel has released five albums, multiple singles, and remixes, and performed at festivals such as Shambhala Music Festival, Lost Lands, and Bassrush Massive. DJ Excision's music is characterized by its heavy dubstep and drumstep elements. He often uses a technique he calls "the wobble", which consists of detuning the lead notes to create a low, distorted bass sound. Abel cites artists like 12th Planet, Bassnectar, and Downlink as his inspiration. Excision live sets are known for their visual spectacle. He frequently uses lasers and other lighting effects, as well as a custom-made PVC stage setup that he calls the "Executioner".
He collaborated with DJ/Producer Downlink and rapper Messinian on the single "Heavy Artillery" in 2010, which was followed by the song "Reploid" with Downlink. Abel released an EP with Downlink titled "Existence VIP" in May 2011. Abel's debut studio album, X Rated, was released in November of that same year on Deadmau5's record label mau5trap. Early in 2012, the North American "X Tour" including Liquid Stranger and Lucky Date promoted the album's release. Around the same time, the album's first remix, "X Rated: The Remixes," was made available. In 2012, Excision began touring with his music festival, Lost Lands. The festival is focused on heavy bass music and features artists such as Zeds Dead, Flux Pavilion, and Illenium.
For the Boomfest event on November 15, 2013, Excision launched a 100,000-watt sound system at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado. During the event, Funtcase and Cookie Monsta performed back-to-back sets alongside Deltron 3030, Brillz, ill. Gates, and Colorado natives Robotic Pirate Monkey. Excision launched a new North American tour in January 2014 with Dirtyphonics and ill.Gates providing support. His "Executioner" video and light production were featured on this new tour. This time, he packed a PK Sound 150,000-watt sound system. On his label Rottun Recordings, Excision released Codename X, his second studio album, in 2015. In 2018, Excision launched his label, Subsidia. The label's first release was a compilation album featuring tracks from various artists signed to the label. Abel has also gained notoriety for his feud with Canadian electronic music duo Zeds Dead. The two have been engaged in a back-and-forth social media battle since 2016. In 2019, Excision was ranked #1 on DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs list.
Excision's Thunderdome 2024 was a complete pleasure for DMNW to attend. The fifth edition of the celebration took place this year in the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Washington. The lasers were fantastic, and the vibes were flawless. Excision and many other top performers turned up the heat at the Dome. The stage was much bigger and better this year than it was the year before. The stage was quite immersive because of the large side displays that stretched on the sides. We confirmed at the performance that the stage is indeed 10 stories high. Overall, the increased level of production greatly impressed me.
