The popularity of Disco Fever led to it becoming a target for criminals. In June 1981, two men attempted to rob the club, but they were quickly thwarted by the staff and security. However, in September 1981, four men broke into the club and robbed the safe, making off with over $8,000. The robbers were never caught. Despite the robbery, Disco Fever remained a popular spot for both local and touring hip-hop acts. In 1982, Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force recorded the song "Planet Rock" at the club. The song became an international hit and helped to popularize hip-hop music outside of the United States. Disco Fever closed its doors in 1987, but its legacy continues on through the music that was created there. The club was an important part of the early hip-hop scene and helped to launch the careers of many artists who went on to become legends in the genre.
