Blur is a Mercury Prize nominee English rock band that formed in London back in 1988. The group consists of four members: singer Damon Albarn, guitarist Graham Coxon, bassist Alex James, and drummer Dave Rowntree. Blur's debut album Leisure was released in 1991 and included sounds from the Madchester and shoegazing genres. After a change in style influenced by guitar pop groups such as the Kinks, Beatles and XTC, Blur went on to release Modern Life Is Rubbish (1993), Parklife (1994), and The Great Escape (1995). Therefore, the band not only popularised the Britpop genre, but also gained immense popularity in the UK. This was due in part to a chart battle with fellow band Oasis in 1995 which was dubbed "The Battle of Britpop". Blur's self-titled fifth album saw yet another shift in style - this time being influenced by lo-fi styles of American indie rock groups. Not only did it become their third UK chart-topping album, but its single "Song 2" finally brought them mainstream success in America as well. Their next album, 13 (1999) saw the band experimenting with electronic and gospel music, as well as more personal lyrics from Albarn. Their seventh album, Think Tank (2003), continued this experimentation with electronic sounds but was also shaped by Albarn's growing interest in hip hop and world music. These influences are represented by minimal guitar work on the album. Coxon left the band during early recording sessions for Think Tank. After completion of its associated tour, Blur disbanded for several years while its members pursued other projects. The band reunited in 2008 to perform a series of concerts for their 20th anniversary. Blur released its eighth studio album, The Magic Whip, in 2015. It was their first album since Think Tank and became the group's sixth UK No. 1 album. The Magic Whip achieved global success and was nominated for the 2016 Mercury Prize.
