Yann Tiersen is a Breton musician and composer. His musical style is often classified as minimalist, although he personally rejects this label. His work draws on a wide variety of influences and utilizes elements of ambient, folk, classical, and rock music.
Yann Tiersen was born in Brest, France (although some sources give his place of birth as Nantes), into a French-speaking family. His mother died when he was a young child, an event which had a profound and lasting effect on him. He began studying piano at the age of four and later took up the violin. At the age of eleven he joined his first band, The Boys.
In 1990, Tiersen moved to Paris where he studied art at the Sorbonne. While in Paris, he began to play in various rock bands. He also started to compose his own music, using old-fashioned instruments such as the accordion and toy piano.
In 1995, Tiersen released his first album, Rue des Cascades. The album was well-received by critics and led to Tiersen's first tour.
In 1997, Tiersen composed the soundtrack for the film L'Absente. The soundtrack was very popular in France and helped to raise Tiersen's profile outside of his native country.
In 1999, Tiersen released his second album, Les Retrouvailles. The album was another critical and commercial success.
In 2001, Tiersen composed the soundtrack for the film Amélie. The soundtrack was an enormous success, selling millions of copies and making Tiersen a household name.
In 2003, Tiersen released his third album, Good Bye Lenin!. The album was inspired by the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of communism in Eastern Europe.
In 2007, Tiersen released his fourth album, Dust Lane. The album was inspired by Tiersen's travels around the world.
In 2010, Tiersen released his fifth album, Skyline. The album was inspired by Tiersen's experience of living in New York City.
In 2012, Tiersen released his sixth album, All. The album was inspired by Tiersen's move back to France after living in New York City for several years.
Tiersen has composed the soundtracks for several films, including Good Bye Lenin! (2003), Les Retrouvailles (2005), and Skyline (2010). He has also released a number of solo albums, including Rue des Cascades (1995), Les Retrouvailles (1997), Good Bye Lenin! (2003), Dust Lane (2007), and All (2012).
