Wilco is an alternative rock band from Chicago, Illinois. Following the disbandment of the country group Uncle Tupelo, the remaining members formed Wilco in 1994. During its first decade, the group's lineup varied frequently; only singer Jeff Tweedy and bassist John Stirratt remained from the initial line-up. Since early 2004, the lineup has been unchanged, consisting of Tweedy, Stirratt, guitarist Nels Cline, multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone, keyboard player Mikael Jorgensen, and drummer Glenn Kotche. The band's name was derived from the shortened form of the army radio command Will Comply, which Jeff Tweedy felt was amusing. Wilco's second album, “Being There”, incorporated more experimental sounds than their original work- a trend that would be carried out throughout the Wilco band's career and which was brilliantly showcased in their most acclaimed record to date: "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot". It was only after Wilco was dropped from the label and the album was leaked online that it finally saw an official release. It is now considered one of their best works.
The creators of the Popeye cartoon series "re-emerged from retirement 30 years later to hand-draw" Wilco's "Dawned on Me." The band was "amazed" when they saw the result. Last 2012, Wilco started its record label, dBpm Records. The name is a nod to the recording process known as "decibels per minute." The group has also released several other Wilco albums and EPs, including two collaborations with Billy Bragg. Wilco has been nominated for nine Grammy Awards, winning two. Wilco has released a stunning 10-album catalog that spans close to two decades - one of which, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2002), is ranked amongst the 500 greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stone. Other acclaimed releases include Grammy award-winning A Ghost is Born (2005), Wilco (The Album), and The Whole Love which was also nominated for a Grammy Award. They have received praise from a variety of publications for their work. Wilco has sold over 1.6 million records in the United States as of September 2016.
With only a brief exchange of electric guitars on tonight's set opener, Hell Is Chrome, the lauded Chicago band Wilco—winners of a Grammy and this 2024, the soundtracks of TV culinary drama The Bear—edge in sideways. Nels Cline, a lanky electric guitarist, rules from the left, switching between brief flurries and sharp peals. Multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone joins in from the right as Tweedy takes center stage. Their guitar triple helix is engaging and nimble, not trite or excessive. For the guitar band, a tremendous amount of deaths have been predicted. But Wilco, a group that is almost 30 years old, has seen them all go. Their appeal is renewed every few years. The four Wilco songs on The Bear brought in new fans, and one of them, Spiders (Kidsmoke), was used twice, the first time as the soundtrack for the well-known one-shot kitchen meltdown in series one, episode seven.
