Ville Hermanni Valo is a Finnish singer, songwriter, and musician. He is the vocalist and main songwriter of the Finnish rock band HIM. Influenced by the likes of Black Sabbath and Type O Negative, Valo began his career playing bass and drums in various bands around Helsinki, before forming HIM in 1991. The band would go on to release eight studio albums, four compilations, three video releases, and two box sets, before their separation in 2017. A prolific songwriter, Valo is credited as the sole writer on many of HIM's songs; in total, he has composed over 400 songs for the band. Valo was born on 22 November 1976 in Helsinki, Finland, to Kari and Anita Valo. As a child, he wanted to be a musician and was particularly interested in the saxophone. However, his mother could not afford to buy him one, so he did not pursue his dream at the time. Valo later said that "music saved me from a fate worse than death", and that it was his passion for music that helped him get through some tough times as a child. Valo's first musical experience was playing drums in a band called Bileet, formed by his childhood friend Mige Amour. Valo soon switched to bass after Mige's father bought him a bass guitar. He joined several other bands, including Don't Go Away, The 69 Eyes, and Himinbjorg. In 1991, he formed HIM with Mikko Lindström and Linde Lindström. He released their debut album Greatest Love Songs Vol. 666 in 1997. Valo has been romantically involved with Finnish television personality and model Jonna Nygrén since 2001. The couple has two sons together, Ville Hermanni Jr (born 2003) and Oliver Gustav (born 2006). Valo is also a fan of the Finnish rock band The 69 Eyes and has collaborated with them on several occasions. On 13 September 2007, HIM's website announced that the band would be going on hiatus, due to Valo's "family and personal life taking precedence over all else". In 2008, Valo appeared as a guest vocalist on Apocalyptica's album World's Collide, singing lead vocals on the song "Somewhere Around Nothing". In 2010, Valo appeared on The 69 Eyes' album Back in Blood, singing guest vocals on the song "Lost Without Love". In 2013, HIM released the single "Into the Night". The album, Tears on Tape, was released in April 2014.
