Thomas Oliver Chaplin is an English singer-songwriter, musician, and composer, best known as the lead singer of the English pop rock band Keane. He was born in Battle, East Sussex, England, on 4 March 1979, to Deborah and Christopher Chaplin. He has an older brother named Dominic and a younger sister named Melanie. As a child, he wanted to become a professional footballer like his father, but when he was 11 he injured his ankle which ended his dreams of becoming a footballer. In 1995, he met Tim Rice-Oxley at secondary school in Winchester. Keane was formed in 1997 and they released their first EP in 1998 called Call Me What You Like.
The band signed with Island Records in 2003 and released their debut album Hopes and Fears in 2004. The album was a huge success and sold over 4 million copies in the UK. Keane's second album, Under the Iron Sea, was released in 2006 and it also sold well, reaching number one on the UK charts. The band's third album, Perfect Symmetry, was released in 2008 and it reached number one in the UK and Ireland. In 2009, Chaplin's wife, Jenna, gave birth to the couple's first child, a son named Sonny. In 2013, Keane released their fourth album, The Lightning Strike. The album peaked at number two on the UK charts. His fifth album, Cause and Effect, was released in 2019 and it reached number one in the UK.
