The Joy Formidable is a Welsh alternative rock band, formed in 2007 in Mold, Flintshire, and currently based in London, England. The band consists of Rhiannon "Ritzy" Bryan (lead vocals, guitar), Rhydian Dafydd (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Matthew James Thomas (drums). They have released four studio albums: A Balloon Called Moaning in 2009, The Big Roar in 2011, Wolf's Law in 2013 and Hitch in 2016. The band's debut album, A Balloon Called Moaning, was released on 18 May 2009 by Atlantic Records in the United States and 4AD worldwide. The Big Roar was released on 24 January 2011 and peaked at number 16 on the UK Albums Chart. It reached number one on the Rock Albums Chart and number two on the Alternative Albums Chart. The album was nominated for the Welsh Music Prize. Wolf's Law, the band's third studio album, was released on 21 January 2013. It peaked at number seven on the UK Albums Chart and number one on both the Rock Albums Chart and Alternative Albums Chart. The album was nominated for the Mercury Prize. The band's fourth studio album, Hitch, was released on 15 April 2016. The Joy Formidable has toured with many bands and artists including Muse, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, The Charlatans and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. In 2010, the band performed at the Reading and Leeds Festivals. In 2012, they toured with Muse as the opening act for The 2nd Law World Tour in Europe and North America. The band's music has been used in many television shows and movies including Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, Grey's Anatomy, Teen Wolf, Community, Suits and How to Be Single.
