About Suede

Since their formation in 1989, Suede has been hailed as one of Britain’s most influential and groundbreaking alternative rock bands. As the first ‘Britpop’ band to emerge from the UK music scene, Suede has crafted an illustrious career spanning over two decades. From their early beginnings to becoming one of the defining sounds of both a generation and a genre, we take a look at the history of this incredible band. Suede was initially formed in 1989 by lead singer Brett Anderson and guitarist Bernard Butler. The two had met while attending Stow College in London, where they worked together to create a distinct sound that synthesized glam rock and punk influences. They chose to name the project “Suede” after being inspired by a song by The Cure called “The Drowners” which featured the phrase “I can feel those suede-blue evenings". After recruiting rhythm guitarist Justine Frischmann, bassist Steve Oakes, and drummer Simon Gilbert, Suede released their first single "The Drowners" in 1992. This initial offering set them on a successful trajectory both critically and commercially with its unique blend of post-punk style guitar riffs and Anderson's emotive vocals. Throughout their career, Suede has released seven full-length studio albums: 'Suede' (1993), 'Dog Man Star' (1994), 'Coming Up' (1996), 'Head Music' (1999), 'A New Morning' (2002), 'Bloodsports'(2013) and 'Night Thoughts' (2016). All these records were considered critical successes with particular acclaim awarded to Dog Man Star which is widely seen as their artistic masterpiece. Several compilation albums such as Sci-Fi Lullabies and Singles also exist alongside countless singles ranging from "Stay Together" (1993) to "Barriers"(2017), making up an expansive body of work that defines modern indie music as we know it today. In addition to recognition for individual albums, Suede has also received various awards including 1994's Mercury Prize for Best Album for Dog Man Star as well as NME Awards for Best British Group in 1993 & 1996 respectively. Over time, Suede has continued touring extensively around the world playing sold-out shows at some of the highest-regarded venues such as the Royal Albert Hall. In 2018, the band celebrated its 25th anniversary with appearances at numerous festivals throughout Europe culminating in a headline performance at London’s O2 Arena celebrating their legacy with fans old and new alike.
