Sleigh Bells is an American musical duo based in Brooklyn, New York, formed in 2008. The duo consists of vocalist Alexis Krauss and guitarist/producer Derek Edward Miller. They are best known for their unique mix of heavy metal and pop sensibilities.
The two members of Sleigh Bells—Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss—had previous experience performing and touring in a musical ensemble. Alexis Krauss was previously a member of the teen pop group RubyBlue, while Derek Miller was a member of the metalcore band Poison The Well.
In an interview with NME, Krauss stated that she and Miller first met in February 2008 at a photo shoot for Paper magazine. At the time, Miller was working as a photographer and Krauss was a model. The two began dating and subsequently decided to form a musical duo.
In an interview with Pitchfork Media, Miller stated that he was initially reluctant to start a musical project with Krauss, as he felt that it would be "too close to home." However, after hearing Krauss sing, Miller changed his mind and the two began working on songs together.
The name "Sleigh Bells" was chosen as a reference to the Christmas season. The duo's first song, "A/B Machines", was released as a free download on their website in May 2008.
In December 2008, Sleigh Bells signed to Taupe Records, an imprint of Mute Records. Their debut album, Treats, was released in May 2010 to critical acclaim.
The album's lead single, "Crown on the Ground", was named one of the best songs of 2010 by Pitchfork Media and NME. Sleigh Bells' unique sound—a mix of heavy metal and pop sensibilities—has been praised by music critics and has drawn comparisons to other artists such as M.I.A., Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Pixies.
In 2011, Sleigh Bells released their second album, Reign of Terror. The album's first single, "Born to Lose", was named one of the best songs of 2012 by Pitchfork Media.
Sleigh Bells have toured with a number of high-profile artists, including Arcade Fire, Muse, and Vampire Weekend. They have also performed at major music festivals such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Bonnaroo.
In 2013, Sleigh Bells released their third album, Bitter Rivals. The album's lead single, "Bitter Rivals", was named one of the best songs of 2013 by Pitchfork Media.
In 2014, Sleigh Bells released their fourth album, Jessica Rabbit. The album's lead single, "I Can Only Stomach What I Kill", was named one of the best songs of 2014 by Pitchfork Media.
In 2016, Sleigh Bells released their fifth album, Kid Kruschev. The album's lead single, "Hyper Dark", was named one of the best songs of 2016 by Pitchfork Media.
