In 1991, the English singer/songwriter Richard Paul Ashcroft (born September 11, 1971) formed The Verve as the band's lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist. He was the lead vocalist and occasional rhythm guitarist of The Verve from its inception in 1990 until their 1999 break-up. He is also a member of the supergroup supernova. After The Verve's break-up in 1999, Ashcroft embarked on a solo career with his debut album, Alone with Everybody, in 2000. He has released six studio albums in total, the most recent being These People in 2016. Ashcroft is also a successful songwriter, having written or co-written numerous hits for other artists including "Bitter Sweet Symphony" and "Lucky Man" for The Verve, as well as "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" for Oasis. He has been nominated for three Brit Awards and two Ivor Novello Awards. He is also a Golden Globe and Academy Award nominee. In addition, he was the recipient of two Q Awards in 2000. His work has been described as "Brit-pop with psychedelia at its core".
