Primal Scream is a British rock band formed in 1984 by Bobby Gillespie (vocals), the only constant member. They began as a metal band and evolved into a dance-fusion act before achieving their greatest popularity with their 1991 debut album Screamadelica, which won the Mercury Prize, the UK's most prestigious music prize in 1991. Their seventh album More Light was released in 2013. Primal Scream's work has encompassed a variety of genres, including rock, electronica, psychedelic, and techno. Their early work was inspired by punk rock and hard rock. Later in their career, they moved towards a more experimental direction with their music, incorporating elements of psychedelia, garage rock, and dance music. The band has been the subject of several documentaries, including one directed by Danny O'Connor, entitled Screamadelica: The Movie (1992). Gillespie has also appeared in a number of films, most notably as a drug dealer in Trainspotting (1996). Primal Scream continues to tour and record, with their latest album Chaosmosis released in 2016. The band's live performances are known for their high energy and unpredictable nature, often incorporating improvisation and audience participation. Their most recent tour was a large-scale world tour in 2018, which celebrated the 30th anniversary of the release of Screamadelica.
