In 1987, Michael Trent Reznor left the band 'Exotic Birds' to work on his material. By 1988, Reznor was employed as a janitor at Right Track Studios. When the studio was closed for repairs, Reznor asked his employer if he could record his ideas while it was vacant. Reznor came up with the name Nine Inch Nails after seeing the instruments used in the studio, which included a nine-inch nail. Over three months, NIN frontman Trent Reznor recorded demo versions of nine songs. When the recording studio reopened, Reznor was asked to leave. He then turned his demos over to a media contact at TVT Records, Tom Zito.
Nothing Records founder Tom Zito agreed to release the album on TVT's new label. In 1989, Pretty Hate Machine was released. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Nine Inch Nails number 94 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. The group's most recent album, 2008's The Slip, was made available for free by Reznor as "on me." Nine Inch Nails has won two Grammy Awards and has been nominated for twelve more. Over 20 million records have been sold worldwide by the group while their music has been used in several films and television series.
