Steven Patrick Morrissey, better known as Morrissey, is an English musician and author from Lancashire. Morrissey began his music journalist profession shortly after disbanding the Nosebleeds, a band he had led for a brief period of time. He started writing music reviews for Record Mirror while continuing to write several short books for Babylon Books, including a twenty-four-page book on the New York Dolls. In July 1980, he published a pamphlet entitled James Dean Is Not Dead, which was later expanded into a full-length book of the same name. The book is a collection of essays, many of which had been previously published in various fanzines, about Morrissey's love for film and pop culture.
In early 1982, Morrissey formed the Smiths with guitarist Johnny Marr. The band quickly became successful, releasing their self-titled debut album in early 1984. The album's mix of jangly guitar pop and Morrissey's emotive lyrics struck a chord with many young people in Britain, who were struggling with the economic stagnation of the early 1980s. The follow-up album, Meat Is Murder, was even more successful, reaching number one on the UK charts. The band's third album, The Queen Is Dead, is widely considered to be their best work, and it solidified the group's reputation as one of the most important bands of the 1980s.
The Smiths broke up in 1987, and Morrissey embarked on a solo career. During which he has released 11 studio albums and several live albums. His debut album Viva Hate reached number one on the UK Albums Chart within two weeks of its release in early 1988. Morrissey's rock music is known for its literary, emotional songwriting and powerful baritone voice. He has been hailed as one of the most influential artists of his generation, and his work has been covered by many other artists. He is also an accomplished author, having published several books of poetry, prose, and essays. In 2019, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist.
