Metric is a Canadian indie rock band from Toronto, Ontario, formed in 1998. Emily Haines (lead vocals, synthesizers, guitar, tambourine, harmonica, piano), James Shaw (guitar, synths), Joshua Winstead (bass), and Joules Scott-Key (drums) make up the band. While attending the Etobicoke School of the Arts, Haines developed an immediate connection with future Broken Social Scene members Kevin Drew and Amy Millan. In 1990, Haines even had a brief stint in a band formed alongside Millan. Metric was founded after they released the EP Mainstream EP, renaming the group to Metric. With the talented Stephen Hague at the helm, Metric launched a new project dedicated to crafting drum-machine-charged New Wave/electropop tunes that would form their debut album.
In the year 2000, Haines and Shaw embarked on an exciting journey to London where they sealed a publishing deal with Chrysalis Records. The five-track EP “Static Anonymity” was released in 2001. The band's first full-length album Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? was released in 2003. Metric's newest album was propelled in popularity by the singles “Monster Hospital”, “Poster of a Girl”, and “Empty”. To further propel their success they went on tour with Rolling Stones in New York City and Bloc Party in the UK. In 2006, the band released their second studio album Live It Out from Last Gang Records which was nominated for Best Alternative Rock Album at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. In 2009, Metric released their third studio album Fantasies, which won the 2010 Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year.
The band followed up Fantasies with Synthetica in 2012, released through their own label, METRIC Music International Inc., and internationally distributed by Cooperative Music/V2. The new album was nominated for Best Alternative Rock Album at the 2013 Juno Awards. The band's fifth studio album, Pagans in Vegas, was released on September 18, 2015. It was preceded by the singles "The Shade" and "Cascades", which were both nominated for Best Rock Video at the 2016 Much Music Video Awards. Metric has been described as indie rock, synthpop, new wave, and dance-rock. The band has been based in Toronto, Montreal, New York City, and London. The Doomscroller Tour last 2022 was a huge hit!
