Known best as a founding member and lead guitarist of the funk band The Meters, Leo Nocentelli is an American musician and songwriter. Rooted in rhythm and blues, Nocentelli's guitar style is characterized by its percussive sound, use of triplets, and distinctive "staccato" picking technique. In addition to his work with The Meters, Nocentelli has also recorded and performed with a number of other artists, including Dr. John, B.B. King, and Jerry Garcia. Born in 1934 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Nocentelli began playing guitar at the age of eight. He was influenced by the city's rich music scene, which exposed him to a variety of genres including rhythm and blues, jazz, and gospel.
In his teens, Nocentelli began performing with local bands, most notably the house band at the Dew Drop Inn. He later joined the Navy, where he played in the ship's band. After his discharge from the Navy, Nocentelli returned to New Orleans and resumed playing with local bands. In 1965, he met Art Neville, who asked him to join The Meters. The band quickly gained popularity in the New Orleans music scene, and soon began touring nationally. Nocentelli's guitar playing was a major contributor to The Meters' sound, and he remained with the band until its dissolution in 1977. In the years since The Meters disbanded, Nocentelli has continued to perform and record both as a solo artist and with various other bands and musicians. He has been inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and he continues to be celebrated as one of the most influential guitarists of his generation.
