Front 242 is a Belgian electronic music group that formed in 1981 and was originally active until 1993. The band's style evolved from early industrial and new wave influences, to become one of the pioneers of electronic body music. They were frontrunners in the development of the EBM genre and influenced many subsequent bands. The group reformed in 1999, and continue to release new music and tour regularly. Front 242's sound is characterized by the use of samples, programmed rhythms, heavy basslines and often cryptic or political lyrics delivered in a deadpan manner by singer Jean-Luc De Meyer. While other Belgian electronic music acts of the 1980s, such as A Split-Second and The Klinik, experimented with harsh electronics and industrial noise, Front 242 combined this with a more danceable rhythm section and De Meyer's detached, emotive vocals. This combination proved to be influential throughout the following decade. After releasing several early singles and EPs, Front 242 released their debut album, Geography, in 1982. The album was very well received by the underground music scene and helped to establish the band's reputation. The group's second album, No Comment, was released in 1984 and featured a more aggressive sound than its predecessor. The album's title track became one of Front 242's best-known songs and was later covered by Nine Inch Nails on their debut album, Pretty Hate Machine. In 1986, Front 242 released the album Official Version, which saw the band experimenting with different sounds and styles. The album's title track is a reworking of the German national anthem, "Deutschlandlied", with new lyrics about the then-current situation in Germany.
