Failure is an American alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1986. The band's original lineup consisted of brothers Jeff and Greg Ginn, vocalist Mike Muir, drummer Anthony Bobo, and bassist Grant Estes. Muir is the only remaining original member of the band.
Since its inception, the band's musical style has shifted several times. Originally a hardcore punk band, they wrote songs that often had politically charged lyrics. Their early work has been compared to the music of Black Flag and the Dead Kennedys. In the late 1980s, they began writing longer, more complex songs and incorporated elements of hard rock and heavy metal into their sound.
In 1999, the band released their first album in six years, No More. The album's title was a direct reference to their hiatus and the problems that had beset them during that time. The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching number four on the Billboard 200 chart
In 2001, the band released another album, Welcome to Oblivion. The album was a departure from their earlier sound, with a more experimental and psychedelic feel. It was not as successful as No More, but sold well enough to reach number seven on the Billboard 200 chart.
The band has been on hiatus since 2003. In that time, Jeff Ginn has released several solo albums, and Muir has formed the supergroup Infectious Grooves.
The band announced their return in January 2009, with a new album, Strange Desire, set for release in July 2009. The album's first single, "Ghost on the Dance Floor", was released in May 2009.
The band released their ninth studio album, To the Edge of Forever, on May 15, 2018. The album was recorded during the band's 2017 world tour in support of their previous album, Strange Desire.
On March 4, 2020, the band announced that they had completed work on a new album, The Great Divide, which was released on May 5, 2020.
