  • About Dope Lemon

Australian musician Angus Stone altered gears with his work under the alias Dope Lemon after becoming well-known abroad as one-half of the indie pop combo Angus & Julia Stone. Angus Stone is an Australian soul and pop singer, record producer and audio engineer. He has released three solo albums, Broken Brights in 2012, Smoking Gun in 2013 and Snow in 2017. His debut solo album, Smoking Gun, was released in April 2009 and comprised material Stone had written while on tour with Angus & Julia Stone. The album peaked at number 24 on the ARIA Albums Chart and was nominated for Best Male Artist at the ARIA Music Awards of 2010. Stone's second solo album, Snow, was released in August 2017. It reached number four on the ARIA Albums Chart and was nominated for Best Adult Contemporary Album at the ARIA Music Awards of 2018. Stone's music has been influenced by a wide range of artists, including Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen and the Grateful Dead. He has said that he is "not trying to make any grand statement" with his music, and that he just wants to "write good songs". Stone was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He is the son of Kim (née Stone) and Kate Stone, who were both music teachers. He has two sisters: Julia, who is also a musician, and Celeste. Stone began playing guitar when he was nine years old, and started writing songs when he was 14. He attended Pittwater House Grammar School on Sydney's Northern Beaches. Stone's first band was called Paper Plane, which he formed with Julia and a friend from school, Tommy O'Dell. The band played gigs around Sydney, including at the Manly-Warringah Club, before disbanding when Stone was 16. Stone then formed the duo Angus & Julia Stone with his sister Julia. The siblings released their self-titled debut album in 2006, and it peaked at number three on the ARIA Albums Chart. Their follow-up album, Down the Way, was released in 2010 and debuted at number one. The album won the ARIA Award for Album of the Year, and the single "Big Jet Plane" was nominated for Single of the Year. Following the success of Down the Way, Angus & Julia Stone undertook an extensive world tour. During this time, Stone began writing songs for his solo project, Dope Lemon. In April 2016, Angus & Julia Stone announced that they were taking an indefinite hiatus from the group. Stone said that he and his sister had "grown apart creatively" and that they needed to "step away from each other for a while". Dope Lemon fans, rejoice!
