The name "Dashboard Confessional" came from the band's debut LP The Swiss Army Romance, which included the song "The Sharp Hint of New Tears." The song was written about a girlfriend of Chris Carrabba's (lead singer/guitarist) who had moved away to California. The song includes the line "dashboard confessional and a car with a broken window." Chris felt the name was appropriate and reflective of the band's mission; "dashboard confessional" refers to the act of pouring out one's emotional turmoil and "a car with a broken window" is representative of the band's rawness and honesty. They are from Boca Raton, Florida. Dashboard Confessional rose to prominence with the release of their 2001 album, The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most.
The album peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Recording Package in 2002. The group's next album, A Mark, a Mission, a Brand, a Scar (2003), debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold by the RIAA. The album produced the singles "Hands Down" and "Vindicated." The group's third album, Dusk, and Summer (2006) peaked at number five on the Billboard 200 and was their highest-charting album to date. The album was certified gold by the RIAA. The song Vindicated from the Dashboard Confessional album was included on the Spiderman 2 soundtrack and played over the film's credits. The song, which became famous, expanded the band's fan base for their following album. The band's style is emo, and it was influenced by acoustic rock and indie rock.
