Collective Soul is an American hard rock band from Stockbridge, Georgia. The group now resides in Atlanta and consists of lead vocalist Ed Roland, rhythm guitarist Dean Roland, bassist Will Turpin, drummer Johnny Rabb, and Jesse Triplett on lead guitar. Roland is eight years older than the musicians he formed the band with. His earlier bands fell apart when their members moved on to sensible employment, but Roland kept going. The band's name was inspired by author Herman Wouk's novel The Caine Mutiny Court Martial. According to Roland, he read the book and "wanted something that would take the focus off of us individually." In 1993, the band put out their first record, Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid, on Rising Storm Records.
Wouk's novel is about "a group of guys on a ship during a storm and how they all come together to save the day." Precious Declaration, Listen, and Heavy are Collective Soul's top hits. Other charting songs for the group include "Shine" (from Atlantic Records), "December," "Gel," "Smashing Young Man", "The World I Know," "Run," and "Why, Part 2" among others. A duet with Elton John entitled, a song called "Lean" and "Untitled #23" were also released. The Collective Soul band has released a total of nine studio albums, two live albums, one compilation Collective Soul album, and one EP. They have sold more than 20 million records worldwide, including over seven million in the United States alone. These songs - 'Right As Rain,' 'Over Me,' and 'Observation of Thought' were also huge hits!
